In a major push to strengthen India’s road infrastructure, the Union Cabinet on 16 July 2026 approved a series of national highway projects worth more than ₹25,000 crore for Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. According to the government, the approved projects include the construction of new highway corridors, expansion of existing national highways, bypasses, elevated stretches, flyovers, bridges, and service roads. The objective is to create a faster and safer transportation network capable of handling increasing traffic volumes in the region.
Rapid urbanisation and rising vehicle numbers have resulted in heavy congestion on several major routes connecting Varanasi with neighbouring cities. The new projects are expected to decongest urban roads by diverting long-distance traffic through modern bypasses and express corridors.
