New Delhi, July 3: The Central Government has approved a one-year extension in service for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, ensuring continuity in India’s diplomatic leadership amid a period of heightened global engagement and strategic international partnerships. The decision was announced through an official government order issued on Thursday.
The extension will allow Misri to continue leading the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and oversee India’s diplomatic initiatives, bilateral engagements, and multilateral commitments over the coming year.
Cabinet Appointments Committee Approves Extension
According to the official notification, the extension has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). The order extends Vikram Misri’s tenure as Foreign Secretary beyond his scheduled retirement, citing public interest and administrative requirements.
Officials said the move is intended to ensure continuity in the conduct of India’s foreign policy and ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
Experienced Career Diplomat
A senior officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Vikram Misri has served India in several important diplomatic assignments during his career.
He has previously served as Ambassador of India to China, Spain, and Myanmar, and has also held key positions in the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs. His extensive diplomatic experience has played an important role in shaping India’s engagement with major global partners.
Key Role in India’s Foreign Policy
As Foreign Secretary, Misri has been closely involved in advancing India’s strategic partnerships, strengthening regional cooperation, promoting economic diplomacy, and expanding engagement with countries across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific.
He has also represented India at several high-level bilateral meetings and international forums, contributing to discussions on trade, security, climate change, connectivity, and global governance.
Ensuring Diplomatic Continuity
The government believes the extension will provide stability and continuity at a time when India is actively expanding its global partnerships and participating in major international initiatives.
Foreign policy experts note that continuity in leadership is particularly significant as India continues to deepen engagement with strategic partners, strengthen regional cooperation, and pursue its long-term diplomatic objectives.
Continued Focus on Global Engagement
With the extension in place, the Ministry of External Affairs is expected to continue prioritising economic diplomacy, regional security, diaspora engagement, multilateral cooperation, and strategic partnerships.
The decision reflects the government’s confidence in Vikram Misri’s leadership and his role in advancing India’s foreign policy objectives during an increasingly dynamic global environment.
