India and Japan Expand Strategic Partnership with New Agreements on Defence, Technology and Clean Energy

New Delhi, July 2: India and Japan have further strengthened their Special Strategic and Global Partnership by signing a series of new agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in defence, advanced technology, resilient supply chains, clean energy, and economic security. The agreements were finalised during the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held comprehensive bilateral talks in New Delhi.

The outcome of the summit reflects the growing convergence between the two nations on regional security, economic resilience, and technological innovation amid evolving global challenges.

Defence Cooperation Takes Centre Stage

One of the key outcomes of the summit was the decision to deepen defence collaboration through enhanced military exchanges, defence technology cooperation, and joint research initiatives.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime security and ensuring a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, while exploring opportunities for future defence industrial collaboration.

Boost for Technology and Innovation

India and Japan agreed to intensify cooperation in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technologies, digital infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing.

The leaders emphasised the importance of innovation-driven growth and agreed to encourage collaboration between research institutions, universities, startups, and private industries.

Building Resilient Supply Chains

The two countries also announced measures to enhance resilience in global supply chains, particularly in sectors such as semiconductors, critical minerals, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and advanced manufacturing.

Officials noted that stronger supply-chain cooperation would reduce dependence on single-source suppliers and improve economic security for both nations.

Expanding Clean Energy Collaboration

Clean energy emerged as another major pillar of the partnership. India and Japan agreed to strengthen cooperation in green hydrogen, renewable energy, energy storage, biofuels, and low-carbon technologies.

Both governments reiterated their commitment to supporting sustainable development while accelerating the transition towards cleaner and more secure energy systems.

Economic and Investment Partnership

The summit also focused on increasing bilateral trade and investment. Japan reaffirmed its long-term commitment to investing in India’s infrastructure, manufacturing, transport, and industrial development.

Both sides agreed to facilitate greater business collaboration and create new opportunities for companies operating in high-growth sectors.

Shared Vision for Regional Stability

India and Japan reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region.

The leaders stressed the importance of cooperation through multilateral forums and pledged to continue working together on regional and global challenges, including economic security, disaster resilience, and sustainable development.

The latest agreements further strengthen one of Asia’s most significant strategic partnerships and are expected to open new avenues for cooperation in defence, technology, clean energy, trade, and innovation.
