New Delhi, June 25, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several states as the southwest monsoon continues to advance across the country, bringing intense showers and raising concerns over flooding, waterlogging, and landslides in vulnerable regions.
According to the IMD, parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and several northeastern states are expected to receive moderate to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to remain alert and follow local weather advisories.
Meteorologists said the strengthening monsoon system, combined with favorable atmospheric conditions, is likely to result in widespread rainfall activity across central, western, and northern India. Some districts may experience extremely heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods and disruptions to transportation services.
State disaster management agencies have been placed on alert, while local administrations are monitoring low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. Emergency response teams have been instructed to remain prepared for any weather-related incidents.
In Maharashtra and Gujarat, officials are closely monitoring river levels as continuous rainfall could lead to localized flooding. Urban centers may also experience traffic congestion and waterlogging due to intense downpours during peak hours.
The IMD has also warned of potential landslides in hilly regions of Uttarakhand and the northeastern states, where saturated soil conditions increase the likelihood of slope failures. Travelers and residents in these areas have been advised to exercise caution.
The monsoon remains crucial for India’s agriculture sector, providing nearly 70 percent of the country’s annual rainfall. While the recent rains are expected to benefit kharif crop sowing activities, excessive precipitation in some regions could damage standing crops and affect farming operations.
Agricultural experts believe timely rainfall will help improve soil moisture levels and support the cultivation of major crops such as rice, pulses, cotton, soybean, and sugarcane. Farmers have been encouraged to follow local agricultural advisories and weather updates.
The IMD continues to monitor weather systems across the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal and will issue further updates as conditions evolve. Citizens are advised to stay informed through official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
