India and Pakistan have a lot of history together and most of them are negative aspects. They have had many arguments over the years. One of the most important things they’ve agreed on is something called the Indus Waters Treaty. This is an agreement made a long time ago, in 1960, to share the water from rivers that flow between both countries. These rivers are very important because millions of people in both countries use this water to drink, grow food, and live their daily lives.
Why is Pakistan worried about its water system?
But recently, things have gotten a bit tense. India has said it might stop the treaty or change how it works. This has made Pakistan very worried. The government of Pakistan has asked India not to do this and to please think again. They are asking India to keep the treaty just like it is, so that the water-sharing continues peacefully. The request came after India opened and broke the treaty after the cruel ‘Pahalgam Terror Attack’ which killed 26 innocent civilians. The retaliation was part of the act of terrorism which was also supported and funded by Pakistan. India will only accept the plea after Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably” ends its support for terrorism. Earlier India sent a letter last year saying it wanted to make changes to the treaty. This is a big deal because the treaty has helped stop big fights about water for more than 60 years.
Pakistan is now trying to stop India from taking further steps. They say that water is a basic need and that changing the treaty could hurt a lot of people, especially farmers who need the water to grow crops. But in today’s time because of the attack, India released the water and caused a flood in Pakistan. Many people said it was ‘a coward’ act but the retaliation was necessary in order for Pakistan to understand that India won’t stand terrorism.

After going against the attack, after many days Pakistan has pleaded with India to reconsider their treaty. India has not officially said anything about the letter or responded to it. But it is expected that India will reconsider only after Pakistan ends its support to terrorism.
Many people say that water should never be used as a weapon or a tool for fighting. But after the Pahalgam terror attack this retaliation was necessary. Many praised it but many opposed it as well.
